Biological Mechanisms of ESWT in vivo

Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive treatment, which has been quite extensively studied in recent years. There are studies indicating it’s success in treating both chronic and acute conditions providing significant decrease in the visual analogue scale (VAS) in patients right after the therapy and in later follow-ups.
However, little is known about the in-vivo biological mechanisms of ESWT. C.M. Waugh et al. have recently conducted a research in this specific topic. For their research they have chosen chronic tendinopathies. Using microdialysis, they examined the real-time biological response of healthy and pathological tendons to ESWT.
